The pinnacle of the Welsh calendar is fast approaching, and I'm not on about the Six Nations matches.

Yes, the Welsh nation goes all out to celebrate St David's day in different ways. Take for instance the possibility of a second wave of teaching strikes.

But, it seems that there is a nine-year tradition in Cardiff that will continue for many St David's Days to come, and that is the St David's Day Run.

Organised first in 2003 and the idea of one Mr Huw Lewis MBE, the idea was to organise an event to both highlight the Welsh national holiday and to raise money for a local charity, with this year's charity of choice being Cancer Research Wales.

Since its inception, the event has gone from strength to strength, raising thousands for local charities such as Help A South Wales Child. The run itself is held in Bute Park in Cardiff and takes in some spectacular views of the capital.

As the event takes place on the weekend closest to St David's Day (4th of March for this year), it attracts some epic costumes, so much so that there is now an award for the best dressed runner.

Two distances are available for participants to run - the 5k and 10k, with the later being added in 2009 due to much interest.

Although only a few weeks away, it seems that there are still spaces available if you'd like to run (only if you're over 13 years of age, mind). If you are indeed interested, visit their website to read more and register your place in the race.

Or, failing that, you could always start practicing now to build yourself up for next year's run?
