  • Happy birds being happy and that.

Recently, a survey was conducted to see where people class as the happiest and unhappiest towns and cities in the fair old Kingdom of the United variety.

And guess who topped the happy list? Yes, it's Carlisle, which is a city in Cumbria, apparently.

You might be thinking, "well, that's an English area, why does this effect me?"

Well, possible querier, I shall tell you.

One Welsh town appears in the top ten. And it's good news.

Llandudno has been named the sixth happiest town in the UK conducted by RightMove. And better yet, there are no Welsh places in the top ten unhappiest towns. That deserves a huzzah, don't you think?

That said, Llandudno is the only town in the top ten of either poll not to be an English town or city, so we can't be sure how any of the other cities and towns in Wales faired. Also, there are no Scottish areas in either poll, so giving Carlisle the title "Happiest Town In The UK" might just be for England and Wales.

Here are some interesting things to think about from the survey.

  • Seven of the ten happiest towns in the UK are from the North, with only Norwich, Dorchester and Exeter being the happiest Southern towns or cities.
  • In contrast, only one place from the North is seen in the top ten unhappiest towns in the UK, with the rest filled with Southern towns, with London dominating.
  • Those under 25 who took part in the poll stated that they were unlikely to feel safe within the local community. It's also said that those under 25 are less likely to spend their recreational time in their local communities.

The poll concentrated on twelve different factors, including decor, costs, pride and safety.

While no Welsh town topped any of the individual categories, Llandudno ended up with an index rating of 104. Now, the conductors of the survey stated that an index of 100 is classed as the national average. That means that Llandudno is 4 index points above the national average, and only three away from Carlisle. That calls for another huzzah, I believe.

Here are the list of the happiest towns and cities in the UK.

  1. Carlisle
  2. York
  3. Huddersfield
  4. Harrogate
  5. Chester
  6. Llandudno
  7. Norwich
  8. Derby
  9. Dorchester
  10. Exeter

And here's the list of unhappiest towns in the UK.

  1. London - East
  2. Ilford
  3. London - South East
  4. Luton
  5. Romford
  6. Oldham
  7. Enfield
  8. London - North
  9. London - West
  10. Harrow

So, lets throw this at you lovely lot. Where do you think Swansea comes? Where would you place the other towns and cities of Wales in this poll?
