Book Review: Far South
Far South by David Enrique Spellman is a groundbreaking book peppered with external multimedia including videos, photos and case studies, as well as a comic book section.
The use of Bitly links and QR codes within the book is a concept I hadn't come across before, yet is one that seems an obvious progression in the world of today's bookworm, many of who reach for their smartphone when looking for further information on matters within their latest read.
The plot is relatively simple: set in Argentina, this is the story of missing theatre director Gerardo Fischer. Investigator and former policeman Juan Manuel Pérez is leading the hunt.
Pérez has history with the theatre group Fischer is part of, having dealt with a violent attack on them. He was also disgraced within the force for uncovering corrupt colleagues and has an eye for the ladies that factor in many of the decisions he makes.
His search for the enigmatic Fischer is engaging enough, but as someone who loves utilising their iPhone 4 apps I relished the moments of external exploration offered by the multimedia. The videos offered clues from characters played by quality actors including Nathan Sussex who I recognised from one of Patrick Jones's plays.
This meant I felt part of the investigative process, and took me back to some of the first books I ever read which had the option of 'choosing your own adventure'. That said, you don't need to view the multimedia straight away (or even at all) to enjoy the book, but it does enhance the experience.
I highly recommend Far South as a new and pioneering experiment in the reading experience. Purists might balk at the idea, but those who embrace new technology and creative freedom will give it the fair crack it deserves.
