Ban On Second Hand Smoke In Cars?
Did you know that almost a quarter of all adults in Wales smoke, and those who live in deprived areas are more likely to smoke?
Did you also know that the Welsh Government has set up a campaign that targets those who smoke in cars while travelling with children? And figures suggest that one in five young people aged 11 and 16 have say they were exposed to smoke the last time they travelled in a car?
Well, all of those facts are correct.
Fresh Start, who aims to protect the young from second-hand smoke, has set up a three-year campaign and at the end of the allotted time, it could result in a total ban on smoking in vehicles with a minor present.
It seems that the majority would agree with this ban, as a survey conducted by ASH Wales found that roughly eighty per cent of Welsh adults either agreed or strongly agreed with a ban of smoking in cars carrying people younger than eighteen years old.
But it seems this campaign has some opposition, as member of tobacco lobby group Forest Simon Clark said the ban would be expensive, a step too far and totally unnecessary.
That said, it seems that this campaign has some legs, as First Minister Carwyn Jones stated that smoking in cars poisons children and would not "shy away" from further legislation.
He also added: "A ban on smoking in cars carrying children will be considered later in this five-year term of government if smoking levels do not reduce as a result of the campaign."
